The sedentary and impractical Hoyle meets Sybil Alvaro in a used bookstore, and she invites him to follow in the footsteps of her favourite author in a search for the mysterious Bloodwood Staff. He’s spent his entire life reading vintage adventure action, and thinks he knows how these things should go.

In the mountains west of Sydney, his expectations are almost immediately derailed, as nobody – not Sybil, and certainly not the irrepressible Ada Drake, stand-in for the obligatory plucky urchin – behaves the way they’re supposed to.

As they gradually realise that their lighthearted adventure has put themselves and their loved ones in dire peril, Hoyle is forced to face the fact that he is woefully unsuited to be the stereotypical hero.

A deliberate subversion of adventure, fantasy and satire tropes, After the Bloodwood Staff is a brilliant and unexpected ride.

After the Bloodwood Staff Laura E Goodin 9781922200723 Books

The adventure begins of all places in an obscure bookstore. Hoyle has just been laid off and Sybil is looking for a partner to share in an adventure. After a shaky start they head to Sydney where they hook up with Ada who is a con artist and dole bludger. In the Blue Mountains, they are abducted by a group of anarchists and in time they find the bloodwood staff. From the outset, the staff is trouble, as are all those who have ever been associated with it.

I found the story to be a little slow and only just plausible. The characters were not likeable which made it difficult for me to care what happened to them. The story also struggled with the Australian setting and focused a lot on trying to explain Australian concepts to American characters. Having said that the plot was novel and quite original. It was also nice to read about local places rather than towns and cities in the USA. I think the book would appeal to people who like a slower pace with an emphasis on characters. I will certainly be keeping an eye on this author and I look forward to future books.

After the Bloodwood Staff Laura E Goodin 9781922200723 Books Reviews

This book was hard to put down because the characters were so perfectly flawed, right when they needed to be heroic. . . And they knew it.
After the Bloodwood Staff is a story with a strong sense of swashbuckling adventure without the overdone, florid prose that usually comes with the territory. I loved the three-dimensional, complex, and immensely relatable characters. The writing was precise and evocative, with descriptions that made me desperately homesick for Sydney; the story itself was fast-paced and never felt like it was dragging (I read 25 chapters in a day!).
Laura is a masterful storyteller and I can't wait to see more from her.
Having only just arrived at Chapter 22, I find myself connected not so much with the story, but it's alternate universe back story a zoo in Dubbo, or in Parkes - there's something in Parkes; quibbles amongst the SES squad; and heaps more from earlier reading. Knowing whence a few of this author's inspirations come adds so much to my enjoyment. GAH! Haven't enjoyed reading a(n) [insert appropriate genre(s) here] piece of fiction in ages. By Grabthar's Hammer! This would make a ripper of a graphic novel/animé/live-action film!
A real page turner that keeps you reading and wanting more. The American protagonist's reactions are so realistic and insightful. His reaction to Australia reminded me of my first visit to Down Under; his love of books can only be appreciated by another bibliophile. Great character development by the author. Looking forward to the NEXT book by Laura E. Goodin.
One of the things I enjoyed most about this page-turner was witnessing one hasty decision lead Hoyle (the protagonist) from the somber and mundane world we first meet him in to the fantastical one he discovers in Australia. I found this gradual transition so compelling as it lends a credibility to the story I rarely find in the genre.

I always love a well-crafted ensemble, and this novel does not disappoint with its band of unlikely heroes. The characters are wonderfully developed and it was a joy to experience their interactions and development throughout the story. The further in I got, the harder it was to put down.

Also, as an American who's spent some time in Australia, I found the uncanny observations of the two American characters extremely amusing!

I definitely recommend this novel, and can't wait to read more from Laura!
At one dramatic point in this adventure, our narrator asks the universe if "all my life I've had hidden magical powers and just needed adversity to bring them out". And the answer is blunt. "No, you are relentlessly ordinary. But you are here." And this adventure asks our narrator, Hoyle, to bring out his best. Like Sarah Connor in the "Terminator " movie, an ordinary life can become extraordinary when it is challenged with important things, like saving your new mates. Thank you for this adventure story, Laura Goodin. I identified with the timid Hoyle and so appreciated the strong woman leader, Sybil. I'd follow her!
I discovered this book was available in format at bedtime and despite the hour, I read two chapters before I realized exactly how late it was. This is everything I look for in a book and more. It put me in that precarious state of both wanting to devour it quickly to find out what happens and reading it slowly to savor the experience. Only a few books have managed to affect me this way. They end up being favorite books I return to frequently.

The main characters were people I could easily relate to, bookish and a bit introverted. Their journey to discovering their less obvious qualities was entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the blend of modern settings with more traditional fantasy elements.

After finishing the book and having loved it, I now find myself in a state of what I call "book hangover". That's the feeling I get after I finish a very satisfying book and have to struggle to find another that I connect with as deeply.

I hope these characters will be returning in a sequel as I'm left wanting to spend more time with them.
