The year was 1851 and the place was Hangtown, the California mining camp that today is known as Placerville. It was here that the unpredictable and entertaining story of Zach Johnson's search for gold takes place. Zach, the son of an Episcopal priest, was a gentle man who'd come to Hangtown from Virginia to get rich. What did he do that so many men wanted him dead.
It was in Hangtown's El Dorado Hotel that Zach met Claire McCarthy, a feisty, independent beauty. Claire came to Hangtown from Boston to get away from her abusive father. Zach and Claire fell in love, but their bond frayed when Zach couldn't accept that Claire was a prostitute. Despondent, Zach turned to Kay, the waitress at Red's who knew how to please him, and his life evolved in ways he never imagined possible.
Hangtown is an action-packed adventure of personal growth that combines history, intrigue, and romance to create a gripping tale. Hangtown is intended for mature readers. The story contains sexual content and moderate language.

I found myself picking up this Western novel every chance I got, and thus I finished reading it in record time. It's a mix of religion, morals/ethics (or, at times, the lack thereof), friendship, sex, and love, all set in a small California Gold Rush town. The characters were well developed and believable, and I was always anxious to see what was going to happen next.Product details

Hangtown edition by John Pratt Bingham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
An excellent read! Highly recommended.
Very well written with interesting, realistic characters and an interesting story set during the California gold rush days. I thououghly enjoyed the book and look forward to purchasing Hangtown 2 when it is completed.
Good book, good read with a real look at living during the Gold Rush days.
Good history kid its the first you heard of Hangtown
A very interesting and factual of early life in California. Many twists and turns to keep you interested.
Great history from the California Gold Country. The writing has depth and the pages turn quickly. Candidly, there are some scenes in the book that made me very uncomfortable and that was their intent. John Pratt Bingham brings a life of faith and study of human behavior to this book and he shares the knowledge he has amassed with his readers.
This is an Intriguing and complicated story of basically good people challenged by the semi-civilized gold rush environment of Hangtown, California in the early 1850's. The story is realistically developed by including other historic characters who frequented Hangtown and the surrounding area during the 1850's such as Jim Beckwourth, Charley Parker, and Black Bart. Even earthquakes are accurately included to further enliven the story. The story grows on you as the characters are developed and you start to relate to their challenges. The book is hard to put down.
